It’s funny how the habits you quit in life seem to spurn newer, better habits to replace them. When I quit smoking in 1988, I started taking the stairs more in my daily life and taking better care of myself. Soon after, in an effort to have a better social life (and meet girls), I started dancing at Go Dance – then Club 183. And I couldn’t be happier I did, because it was there that I fell in love; first with dancing, and then with the idea of passing along to others this wonderful way of self expression, and the accomplishments that come with dancing. Nothing surpasses the passion I have for teaching dance except for the love I have for the one I met while dancing. She has kind eyes and a beautiful smile, most know her as my angel Kristy.
Since my start, I have completed the DVIDA Certification program, placed 2nd in Pro-Pro Two Step with studio owner Mylie Alrich at the Texas Hoe-Down, and won numerous awards with my students at the Hill Country Dance Classic’s 2005 and 2007. In addition to numerous other outings, I have spent many a night out salsa dancing at Miguel’s, and performing with my wife, Kristy. If I had to pick a favorite dance, it would be West Coast Swing. It uses elements from almost all other styles of dance, both fast and slow. Also, it allows the most interpretation of music and self for both the leader and the follower.
I work part-time as an instructor now, but one day hope to change that. During the day I work for the Austin Club, and nights and weekends I can be found teaching here at Go Dance. When I’m not working or dancing, I spend my time with Kristy – shopping, working in the yard, even scuba diving! Before moving to Austin and starting my dance career, I spent time in Vietnam and in the 1970’s worked for NASA. My time at NASA was under top secret security clearance, so I don’t talk about it very often, but I can say that I know of a microwave refrigerator – yes, freezing, not cooking! But now it’s all about the dance – it’s the only thing that keeps me from being a workaholic or a couch potato.
